Terms and Conditions

Last updated: September 24, 2026

1. About These Terms

These Terms are the agreement between you and ShowUp for using the ShowUp app (the "App") and our website, showuphabits.com. ShowUp is run by Brett Stables in Sydney, Australia ("ShowUp", "we", "us"). By creating an account or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.

2. What ShowUp Is

ShowUp helps you make a habit of going to the gym. You sign a contract to show up, prove each visit with a selfie, and review other members' check-ins while they review yours. ShowUp is free to use. A stake is optional: a refundable hold on your own card, set up on our website.

3. Your Account

You must be at least 13 years old to use the App. Give us accurate information when you create your account, keep your sign-in details to yourself, and tell us straight away if you think someone else has used your account. You are responsible for what happens under your account.

4. Contracts and Check-ins

A contract is a commitment you make in the App: how long it runs, and how many of its days you may miss (your rest days). To complete it, you need an approved check-in on all of its days except your rest days. You check in once a day with a selfie taken in the App, and other members review it (section 5). Days are counted in the contract's own time zone, set when it was created.

A contract completes if, when it ends, enough of its check-ins have been approved. If there are not enough yet, but there would be if the check-ins still waiting for review were approved, we wait for those reviews before we decide, and nothing is taken while we wait. If other members have still not reviewed them 7 days after the end, we review them ourselves. A contract fails as soon as it can no longer be completed, that is, when there are not enough days left to reach the check-ins it needs, even if every check-in still waiting for review were approved. It also fails if it ends without enough approved check-ins and approving every check-in still waiting for review would not make up the difference.

5. Peer Review and Appeals

Each check-in is shown to other members, who approve it if the photo shows you at the gym and reject it if it does not. We may also review check-ins ourselves. When you review, be fair and honest, and judge only whether the photo shows the person at the gym. Abusing reviews, for example rejecting good check-ins or approving them by arrangement, can get your account suspended or closed.

If a check-in of yours is rejected, you can appeal it once, from the App, within 72 hours of the rejection. Appeals are decided by us, not by other members. If we approve an appeal, the check-in counts as approved. What an appeal means for money at stake is in section 7.

6. Stakes

Each contract carries one stake, which you choose: money (a hold on your card, taken only if the contract fails; see section 7), a witness (one person you name is told how the contract ended), or pride (nothing is held and nobody is told). You choose it when you sign, and set up money or a witness on our website. A stake you have chosen but not set up does nothing if the contract fails.

While a contract is running you can set up a stake or make it stronger, but not weaker. While a hold is in place, money can be raised but not lowered, and cannot be swapped for another kind of stake. A witness, once named, cannot be changed or removed, unless our email to them cannot be delivered.

A stake is not a fee for using ShowUp. It does not buy anything, unlock any feature or earn a prize, and none of it is paid to other members.

Witnesses. To name a witness, you give us their first name and email address, and your own first name. Only name someone you know. We email them when you name them, and once more when the contract ends, to say whether you finished. If it fails, we wait until that is settled: no check-in still waiting for review, no appeal open and no rejection less than 72 hours old. The emails give their first name and yours, how long the contract runs and how many days it lets you miss, and never the contract's name or anything else you typed. A witness can unsubscribe, and is then not told. If you delete your account, your witness is not contacted again.

Groups. In a group contract, everyone has the same kind of stake. If it is money or a witness, you cannot check in until yours is set up, and money must be at least the amount the group's owner put on it.

7. Money Stakes

The hold. You set up a money stake on our website, for between $10 and $1,000 in US dollars. When you confirm it, we ask your bank to place an authorisation hold on your card for that amount straight away. A hold is not a charge: your bank sets the amount aside and shows it as pending, but no money is taken unless the contract fails. If your card is not in US dollars, your bank converts the amount and may charge you a fee for that. The card must be your own.

Your permission. By setting up a money stake, you authorise us to keep a hold for that amount on your card until the contract is settled, to renew it as described below without asking you each time, and to take it if the contract fails.

Renewals. A card hold only lasts a few days, so until the contract is settled we replace yours before it expires: about every 6 days on Mastercard, American Express and Discover, and about every 4 days on Visa and every other card or payment method, including Stripe Link. We place the new hold first, then cancel the old one. Your statement may show both for a few days, but they are the same stake: only one hold is ever taken for a contract.

If the contract completes. We cancel the hold after the contract ends, and nothing is taken. Your bank decides how quickly the pending amount disappears; it can take a few days.

If the contract fails. We take (capture) the hold, and it becomes a payment to ShowUp of the full amount of the stake. We do this once the contract can no longer be completed, which can be before its end date (we check twice a day), or once it has ended without enough approved check-ins (section 4). We wait while any check-in on the contract was rejected less than 72 hours ago, so that you have time to appeal, and while check-ins still waiting for review could still complete it. We take only one hold per contract, and never more than the stake.

Appeals. An appeal still being decided when those 72 hours are up does not stop the hold being taken. If we approve an appeal on a contract whose stake has already been taken, we refund the full amount to your card, and nothing is held on that contract any more. Refunds usually reach your card within 5 to 10 business days, depending on your bank. If we reject the appeal, the stake stays taken.

If a hold cannot be renewed. If we cannot renew a hold, for example because your card is declined, the hold already in place lasts until it expires, a few days at most, and can still be taken if the contract fails before then. An expired hold cannot be taken. If a later renewal succeeds, the new hold is your stake as before.

Raising a stake. While the contract is running you can raise a money stake on our website, but you cannot lower or remove it while its hold is in place. We place a new hold for the full new amount on the same card, then cancel the old one. If the new hold is declined, nothing changes and the old hold stays in place.

Deleting your account. Deleting your account does not end a contract with money held early. It carries on exactly as it would have: we keep renewing the hold, take it if the contract fails and release it if it completes. You cannot check in after deleting your account, so the contract completes only if the check-ins you have already made are enough once they have been reviewed (section 4). When it is settled, we email you if the stake was taken or the contract completed, then delete what we kept for it. Records of money we held or took for you are kept for seven years, because the law requires it, and then deleted (see our Privacy Policy).

Your card details. Cards are handled by Stripe, our payment processor. You enter your card on a page run by Stripe, and ShowUp never sees or stores your full card number or security code: we see only details such as the card's brand, last four digits and expiry date, or the email address of a Stripe Link account. Stripe keeps your card for your stakes under its own privacy policy.

Questions or mistakes. If you think a hold or a charge is wrong, email support@showuphabits.com before disputing it with your bank, and we will look into it.

8. Your Photos and Content

Your check-in photos, and anything else you send us, stay yours. By uploading a photo, you let us store it and show it to the members who review it, to the members of any group you are in, and to us, for as long as it is needed to run ShowUp, including to decide reports and appeals. Only upload photos of yourself that you have the right to share, and nothing that shows other people without their permission. You are responsible for what you upload.

9. Reporting and Blocking

ShowUp has no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive users. Photos must not contain nudity, sexual content, violence, hate, harassment, anything illegal, or anyone else's private information.

If a photo you are asked to review is offensive or inappropriate, report it from the review card. Reports come to us, and we review them. When you report a photo, you can also block the person who sent it. A block works both ways: you are no longer given their check-ins to review, and they are no longer given yours. They are not told. You can unblock someone from your Profile.

We may remove content, and suspend or close the account of anyone who breaks these rules. To tell us about anything else, use Contact support in the App or email support@showuphabits.com.

10. Rules for Using ShowUp

Do not: submit a check-in that is not a genuine, current photo of you at the gym; review dishonestly, or approve or reject check-ins by arrangement with someone else; use a second account to review your own check-ins; harass, threaten or abuse anyone; upload anything unlawful or objectionable; try to get around our security, read or change data that is not yours, or interfere with how ShowUp works; or use ShowUp for commercial purposes without our permission.

11. Closing and Deleting Accounts

You can delete your account at any time. In the App, under Profile โ†’ Delete account, it is deleted straight away. If you no longer have the App, email support@showuphabits.com from the address on your account and we will delete it for you within 14 days. What happens to a contract with money held is in section 7, and what we delete and keep is in our Privacy Policy.

We may suspend or close your account if you break these Terms. If we close it, it is deleted in the same way as if you had deleted it yourself, including what happens to money still held.

12. Other Services We Use

ShowUp relies on services run by other companies: Google Firebase (accounts, data and photos), Stripe (cards and payments), Resend (email), Expo (notifications on iPhones), and Apple or Google if you sign in with them. Their own terms and privacy policies apply to what they do. We are not responsible for the availability or reliability of services we do not run.

13. Intellectual Property

The App, our website, and the ShowUp name, logo and design belong to ShowUp and are protected by intellectual property laws. You may use them only to use ShowUp. Do not copy, modify, sell or redistribute them, or build anything from them. Your own photos remain yours (section 8).

14. Privacy

How we collect, use, keep and delete your information is set out in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms.

15. Disclaimer of Warranties

We work to keep ShowUp running and accurate, but it is provided "as is" and "as available". We do not promise that it will always be available or free of errors, or that every review will be right. Your use of ShowUp is at your own risk. Nothing in these Terms excludes a guarantee or right you have under the Australian Consumer Law or any other law that cannot be excluded.

16. Limitation of Liability

To the extent the law allows, ShowUp is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, such as loss of profits, data or goodwill, arising from your use of the App or our website. This does not limit a refund you are owed under these Terms, such as after an approved appeal.

17. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia. If you have a problem with ShowUp, please contact us first so we can try to put it right. You and ShowUp submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of New South Wales for any dispute arising from these Terms or your use of the App. Nothing in these Terms excludes any right you have under the Australian Consumer Law or other laws that cannot be excluded.

18. Changes to These Terms

We may change these Terms. We will tell you about any material change in the App, by email or on our website. If you keep using ShowUp after a change, you accept the new Terms. The "Last updated" date shows when they last changed.

19. Severability

If any part of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that part will be limited or removed only as far as necessary, and the rest of these Terms stays in full force.

20. Contact Us

Questions about these Terms, a stake or a charge: use Contact support in the App (Profile โ†’ Contact support) or email support@showuphabits.com. ShowUp is run by Brett Stables in Sydney, Australia.
